![]() The story starts with Old Major teaching the animals “Beasts of England” which, combined with his speech about his dream of animals working only for themselves instead of humans, sets the revolution in motion. Songs are an important motif because they intertwine with some of the major themes of the novella seamlessly. There are two major motifs that speak to the broader themes of this novella: songs and rituals. Considering that the Russian communist revolution occurred from about 1917 into the 1940s, it can be surmised that Animal Farm likely took place sometime in this timeframe. The farm on which this story takes place is located in the English countryside which suggests that a communist revolution is not as far away as most English people wanted to believe at this time. ![]() ![]() Later, once the animals overthrow the humans in charge, the farm is renamed Animal Farm and represents Russia under communist revolution. Considering that Animal Farm is an allegory, it is important to note that this version of the farm-Manor Farm-is meant to represent imperialist Russia ruled by aristocrats. ![]() The novella opens on Manor Farm where animals are dutifully working for their human rulers. Numbered line drawings accompanied by lists of words serve as keys to the paintings. The reader need not go crazy, however, trying to name all of the words represented in the images (at last count, 7,825!). ![]() One wonders at the artist accomplishing this seemingly Herculean artistic endeavor. A friend with autism describes his approach as a clinician, getting inside the heads of people with neurological differences. What he is doing looks like a kind of extreme empathy, feeling his way into the animal. Still, for me, the standout moment of the film is Sacks at a zoo, crouched in front of a chimpanzee enclosure: face pressed against the glass, nose to nose with a chimp, mirroring its movements, twisting his lips, becoming simian. ![]() ![]() They were also directly responsible for major advances in rocketry, medical treatments, and the US Space Program. And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side." Moral without being moralistic, the tale sends a simple and direct message unfreighted by pomp or pedantry. While there, he helps Leo with his garden and rescues an injured panda and her cub, and in so doing, finds the answers he seeks. He visits Leo, an old turtle who lives in the mountains. Yearning to be a good person, Nikolai asks, "When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?" Sonya the heron, Gogol the monkey and Pushkin the dog offer their opinions, but their answers do not satisfy Nikolai.
